We have ended up with a landscape that has huge numbers of self employed people and people working zero hours contracts, we have a small number of huge multinationals and in between there is not enough, we need to move to having a balanced landscape, we need more in th emiddle. We have too many businesses that are too big to fail.

make this happen going to be created and what should the role of
government be?”

I think we need to look at what has worked here in the past and is working now in other countries. We have been stuck in a supply side loop since the election of Margaret Thatcher in 1979 and government shows no sign whatsoever of attempting to escape it – even though it is clear that it is a project which has failed, failed and failed again and has no prospect of doing anything but fail in the future.

The palin fact is that increasing the rewards which capitalists get (by weakening labour and reducing tax take) has not created the prosperity its advocates claimed it would. Iit has done the opposite. So it’s time to stop doing it. It’s as simple as that.

We need strong unions, high wages and a state which invests in infrastructure, training and education and is willing to interfere in the workings of the economy itself (ie pick winners) when it is clear that intervention is needed – as it is now.
